LEGENDARY JAZZ MUSICIAN

(1926- 1967)

John Coltrane was born in Hamlet, North Carolina on September 23, 1926. The Coltrane family moved to High Point when John was only three months old.  He attended William Penn High School, where he began playing the saxophone.

In 1943, Coltrane moved to Philadelphia, where he studied music and made his professional debut.  Over the course of his career, he appeared with such jazz legends as Dizzy Gillespie, Earl Bostic, and Thelonious Monk.  He gained national recognition while playing with Miles Davis from 1955 to 1960.  In 1965, he was named Jazzman of the Year.  Coltrane died on July 17, 1967 at the age of 40.

A statue of John Coltrane is located in downtown High Point to celebrate his life in the city. The Coltrane family home in High Point, located on Underhill Street, was recently purchased by city. Plans are being made to turn the home into a museum.
