PRINCIPAL OF WILLIAM PENN HIGH SCHOOL
Samuel Burford was born in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1905. He began teaching in North Carolina in 1928. In 1933, he came to High Point to be the principal of William Penn High School, where he remained for 35 years until it closed in 1968. He then went on to serve as the principal of T. Wingate Andrews High School from its opening in 1968 until he retired in 1971. Burford was the first African American principal in High Point. As a dedicated civic leader, he served as the first African American member of the High Point City Council from 1971 to 1979. Burford was also on the Arts Council Board of Directors, Chairman of the Board of Carl Chavis YMCA, a hospital trustee, and an active church leader.
