R. C. Baldwin Avenue Street Sign On August 5, 2002, Olga Street was renamed R. C. Baldwin Avenue in honor of the late Rosetta Baldwin
HISTORY November 2000 saw the creation of The Rosetta C. Baldwin Foundation as an organization. The Foundation preserves the legacy and the home of the late Rosetta Baldwin and serves as a community resource center. After Baldwin's homegoing on November 25, 2000, the mayor of High Point, North Carolina, the Honorable Mr. Arnold Koonce made a proclamation, with unanimous consent of the city council that November 29 is "Rosetta C. Baldwin Day" in the city of High Point. The birth of the Rosetta C. Baldwin Museum soon followed in November of 2001. On August 5, 2002, Olga Street was renamed R. C. Baldwin Ave. in her honor. During 2003, the Foundation received its 501(c)(3) status making it tax exempt. On November 29, 2003, the 12th District Representative Congressman, Mel Watt, was the special guest at the day's festivities. Watt led the procession that marched from Baldwin's Chapel Seventh-Day Adventist Church and the Rosetta C. Baldwin Educational Center on College Drive and Leonard Avenue, down R. C. Baldwin Avenue, past the Kindergarten Building and through the historic Green Hill Cemetery to the Baldwin family gravesite, where a floral wreath was placed on the headstone of Rosetta Cora Baldwin. This is a tradition that is held every year on November 29, "Rosetta C. Baldwin Day." The Foundation was the winner of the Free On-Site Consultation Service (FoCoS) Award from the North Carolina Museums Council in 2005. The award provides assistance and consultation for small museums. Also in 2005, the High Point Convention and Visitors Bureau awarded the Foundation a grant for $10,000 to repair the roof of the museum building and to install a security system. The 2006 leadership class at the High Point Chamber of Commerce adopted the Rosetta C. Baldwin Museum. The team installed a new central heating and air condition system, painted and repaired the porch, repaired windows, and landscaped the front of the museum. On May 4, 2007, an exhibition that traced the lives of former Baldwin's Chapel Church School students entitled, "The Class of 1963," opened at the High Point Museum. It was produced by graduate students at the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. The exhibition was on display at the museum until August 19, 2007. |
